Question 1

Is Typing.com really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. All lessons, games, and typing tests are free, with no trial period and no card required. The free tier is funded by banner ads and keeps student progress data for 70 days rather than indefinitely.

Question 2

What is the difference between PLUS and Premium?

Accepted Answer

PLUS Edition is the paid plan for individual learners, adding an ad-free experience, exclusive games, and detailed progress reports. Premium is the school and district plan, sold per student per year, and adds unlimited data retention, per-student settings, and priority support.

Question 3

Why did my student progress disappear?

Accepted Answer

Free accounts retain progress data for 70 days. Records older than that are no longer available in reports. Export or capture class reports at the end of each unit, or move to Premium for unlimited retention.

Question 4

How do students log in without an email address?

Accepted Answer

Teachers can create student accounts using a class code and a first name, so no personal email is needed. Schools can also sign students in through Google Classroom, Clever, or ClassLink single sign-on.

Question 5

Does Typing.com collect or sell children's data?

Accepted Answer

Typing.com states that personally identifiable information is never required to use the platform, that all communication within the site is TLS encrypted, and that it does not share or sell user data. Schools should still check the current privacy policy against their own district requirements.

Question 6

What is a good typing speed to aim for?

Accepted Answer

Around 40 words per minute is a reasonable working target for teenagers and adults. Accuracy matters more than raw speed, since time lost to backspacing cancels out a higher words-per-minute score.

Question 7

Can I take a typing test without creating an account?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The quick typing test runs without sign-up and reports words per minute and accuracy immediately, which is enough for a one-off check before a job application.

Question 8

Are the ads a problem for young children?

Accepted Answer

They can be. Rotating banner ads appear on the lesson screen in the free version and are the most frequently cited drawback in reviews, particularly for primary-age students who are being asked not to look away from the screen. Premium removes them entirely.

Question 9

Does Typing.com teach anything besides typing?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The curriculum also covers online safety and privacy, core computer skills, responsible AI use, everyday applications such as documents and spreadsheets, and an introduction to coding. The deeper tracks sit on the paid tier.

Question 10

When is a different typing site the better choice?

Accepted Answer

If you already type competently and want drills that adapt to your specific weak keys, an adaptive tool such as Keybr will move you faster than a fixed beginner sequence. If you only need a speed score today, a dedicated test site is quicker than creating an account.
